Valentina Tereshkova

Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova (March 6, 1937), is a retired Soviet Airforce Major General and Cosmonaut, and was the first woman to fly in space on board Vostok 6 on June 16, 1963. In October 2000 she received the "Greatest Woman Achiever of the Century" award in London by the International Women of the Year Association. She remains the only woman in the world to have carried out a solo flight into space for the duration of three days and also has a moon crater and an asteroid named after her, now heads the Russian Government's Centre for International Scientific and Cultural Co-operation.
