When translating the Bible it is important to capture the original author's meaning so you need to understand the original author's language and culture.
The Ancient Near East culture of the Jews was not very similar to contemporary American culture which is very individualistic. So using a "A personal rendition of this phrase" is wrongheaded.
Globalism wasn't even a thing in the 2nd century. And widespread depression and addiction wasn't an issue either.
Given the above, I suspect the suggested translation in the article is a poor one.
