The County Sheriff (in most places in the United States) is the top law enforcement official of his or her jurisdiction, generally within the boundaries of a county (though in an incorporated city, the local police chief is the top law enforcement official within the city limits). The Sheriff is generally elected to a term of four years, can be re-elected (the number of allowable terms depends on state law), and is accountable only to his constituents.
