The Latvian Gambit (previously known as the Greco Countergambit) is a gambit by black of a weak-side pawn as follows:

1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 f5?!

It has been called one of the worst of all classical openings, but has its supporters who enjoy the challenging tactical dilemmas which ensue.

Caution: do not insist on this opening unless you are sure to defend your weak side carefully! Otherwise white can capture other pieces fairly quickly.

One follow-up move is to bring the black queen out into the gap early, by Qf3.
