A mutagen is a substance that causes mutations to DNA and an organism's genome. This causes a number of diseases and is closely related to Carcinogenic substances. In some cases, things like radioactive materials, can cause both cancer, as well as birth defects.

A mutagen can be natural or man-made agent, and physical or chemical, as long as it has the potential to alter the sequence or structure or sequence of DNA.
