A square is a rectangular polygon with four sides of equal length. Square.gif

In algebra square means number multiplied by itself. For example square of 3 is 9 (3·3 = 32).

In townscape terms, a square is an open space within a town or city, of a perfect or approximately squre shape, or of a regular rectangular shape. A square can be open for public intercourse, as in a market square or public square, or the centre of the square can comprise private grounds (as in the garden squares constructed in the high-class residential suburbs of west London in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries).
