A sandwich (or "butty") is the name given to a popular lunchtime food consisting of a filling (such as meat or cheese, sandwiched between two pieces of bread. Condiments such as mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard are commonly used to add extra flavour to the sandwich. The beauty of the sandwich is that the possibilities for fillings are almost endless and that the bread keeps one from getting the filling on one's hands allowing them to be eaten anywhere.

Bread

Sandwiches can be made with almost any kind of bread. Popular sandwich breads include:

Wholemeal Bread

The French Baguette

Soda Bread

Black Bread

The Bread Roll (also known as a "cob", "barm", "bampot" or "oven bottom")

Popular Sandwiches

Delicious chip butty with Tomato Ketchup

The knuckle sandwich is a traditional English factory worker's lunch.

The Double Pork Sandwich is another traditional English dish.

The "BLT" consists of bacon, lettuce and tomato.

The Beef Roll consists of sliced beef and horseradish on a bread roll

The Bombay Roll consists of sweet and sour chicken, lettuce and soy sauce on a bread roll and was popular in ports where trade was done with the Orient.

The Bacon sandwich is a popular breakfast item and consists of bacon and either brown sauce or tomato ketchup

The chip butty consists of a buttered bap, cob or soft roll filled with hot freshly fried chips.

Sandwich Trivia

It is thought to be named after the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, although he never used nor sought to perpetuate the term. Sandwiches had existed long before the birth of Lord Sandwich. In fact the earliest known example of a sandwich is thought to be the Paschal lamb and matzo combination eaten by Hillel the Elder at Passover. It is likely that Jesus ate sandwiches.
