A chicken is a bird that is commonly domesticated for food. Chickens are one of the few birds that cannot fly. Other notable exceptions include the emu and the penguin. Chickens lay eggs. Unlike other creatures, chickens are able to survive for some time without their heads. Chickens are mentioned in the Bible:

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! (Matthew 23:37)

Creation scientists haven't yet figured what came first: the chicken or the egg. This is known as the creation conundrum. Evolutionists maintain that the egg must have come first, since, a chicken can only hatch from a chicken egg, but two parent birds which were not quite 'genetically' chickens can in theory have fertilised and laid it, and created the first chicken. How one defines what is genetically a chicken and what is not quite a chicken is, of course, open for debate.
