Gary Glusscock DeLaune (June 20, 1933 – February 6, 2022)[1] was an Oklahoma-born broadcast journalist who covered news, feature stories, and sports, He is the first broadcaster to report the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy and two days later observed the fatal shooting of Kennedy's assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, while he was working for KLIF Radio in Dallas.[2]

For twenty-eight years from 1971 until his retirement in 1999, he worked for the CBS television station in San Antonio. At various times, he broadcast games for the San Antonio Spurs, the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners, and University of Incarnate Word Cardinals.[3]

Known for wearing colorful and sometimes gaudy sports coats, DeLaune also spent six decades calling high school football on the radio. He called games on television after his retirement.

“He was just beloved here," said longtime friend Richard Oliver, a former sports editor at The San Antonio Express-News who called games alongside DeLaune. “He was just one of those faces that everyone recognized as being part of the San Antonio landscape for all of those years.”

Colleague Deborah Knapp said that DeLaune loved telling the stories of everday people and did so in unusual ways. Along with Ricci Ware and Bruce Hathaway, DeLaune was a mainstay of 20th century radio and television broadcasters in San Antonio.
