A sammich (or "butty") is the name given to a popular lunchtime food consisting of a filling (such as meat or cheese), between two pieces of bread. Condiments such as mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard are commonly used to add extra flavour to the sanmmich. The beauty of the sanmmich is that the possibilities for fillings are almost endless and that the bread keeps one from getting the filling on one's hands allowing them to be eaten anywhere.
Bread
Sammiches can be made with almost any kind of bread. Popular sammich breads include:
- Wholemeal Bread
- The French Baguette
- Soda Bread
- Black Bread
- The Bread Roll (also known as a "cob", "barm", "bampot" or "tea-cake" in West Yorkshire, a "bread cake" in Leeds or "oven bottom" in Lancashire
- The Stotty Cake or stottie, a round, flat loaf beloved of Tyneside
- Small children
Popular Sammiches
- Perhaps the best-known sammich in the world is the hamburger
- The "BLT" consists of bacon, lettuce and tomato.
- The Beef Roll consists of sliced beef and horseradish on a bread roll
- The Philadelphia Cheese Steak sammich is a regional delight copied in many places
- The bacon sammich is a popular breakfast item and consists of bacon and either brown sauce or tomato ketchup
- The club sammich uses three pieces of bread, with several layers of meat, cheese, and vegetable ingredients. They are usually served quartered, and held together with fancy toothpicks.
- The chip butty consists of a buttered (or larded) bap, bampot or soft roll filled with hot freshly fried chips.
- Peanut butter and jelly (PB&J)
- Ham and cheese
Sammich Trivia
It is thought to be named after the 4th Earl of Sammich, John Montagu, although he never used nor sought to perpetuate the term. The popular legend is that he ordered bread and meat one evening during an extended card game. When the victuals arrived, he sliced the bread and meat and 'sammiched' the bread between the meat, so that he could carry on eating and playing. In fact sammiches had existed long before the birth of Lord Sandwich.
Closing Note
The Wikipedia definition of sandwich, found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/sandwich is clearly far too liberal for us, and we need our own article. Imagine all that horrible liberal mayonaise!
