It is thought to be named after the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, although he never used nor sought to perpetuate the term. The popular legend is that he ordered bread and meat one evening during an extended card game. When the victuals arrived, he sliced the bread and meat and 'sandwiched' the bread between the meat, so that he could carry on eating and playing.
