The Russo-Japanese War was a short conflict between the Empires of Russia and Japan from 1904-05. The two countries were competing over trade rights in Manchuria and Korea. The Japanese declared war and attacked Port Arthur (now Lüshun, China). The loss of the battle (and eventually the war) on the part of Russia reduced public support of Czar Nicholas II. The war's effects on Russia would contribute to the social turmoil that would culminate in the Russian Revolution. It also gave Japan a more respected reputation in Europe.
