Sandwich.jpg

A sandwich (or "butty") is the name given to a popular lunchtime food consisting of a filling (such as meat or cheese), sandwiched between two pieces of bread. Condiments such as mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard are commonly used to add extra flavour to the sandwich. The beauty of the sandwich is that the possibilities for fillings are almost endless and that the bread keeps one from getting the filling on one's hands allowing them to be eaten anywhere.

Bread

Sandwiches can be made with almost any kind of bread. Popular sandwich breads include:

Wholemeal Bread

The French Baguette

Soda Bread

Black Bread

The Bread Roll (also known as a "cob", "barm", "bampot" or "tea-cake" in West Yorkshire, a "bread cake" in Leeds or "oven bottom" in Lancashire

The Stotty Cake or stottie, a round, flat loaf beloved of Tyneside

Popular Sandwiches

Delicious chip butty with Tomato Ketchup

The "BLT" consists of bacon, lettuce and tomato.

The Beef Roll consists of sliced beef and horseradish on a bread roll

The Bacon sandwich is a popular breakfast item and consists of bacon and either brown sauce or tomato ketchup

The chip butty consists of a buttered (or larded) bap, bampot or soft roll filled with hot freshly fried chips.

Sandwich Trivia

It is thought to be named after the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, although he never used nor sought to perpetuate the term. The popular legend is that he ordered bread and meat one eveing during an extended card game. When the victuals arrived, he sliced the bread and meat and 'sandwiched' the bread between the meat, so that he could carry on eating and playing. In fact sandwiches had existed long before the birth of Lord Sandwich.
