The term hominid is used to refer to humans, as well as the great apes, including orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees, Bonobos, and their ancestors up to several millions of years ago.

It is also colloquially used to refer to species ancestral to modern humans, including Australopithecus, Paranthropus, Ardipithecus, and Homo although the correct term for this group is hominina.

The term is also used incorrectly to refer to prehistoric cave men alone. Several dictionaries still use this latter definition.

Note: "Homo sapiens neanderthalensis" is an archaic name for "Homo neanderthalensis", it used to classify Neanderthals as a human subspecies.
