Andrew Johnson (December 29, 1808 - July 31, 1875) was the 17th President of the United States of America. He was the first president to be impeached by Congress, but he was not removed from office, keeping his tenure in office by one vote. The reason for impeachment was his violation of the Tenure of Office Act, which denied him the power to dismiss presidential appointees without the Senate's permission.
Accession to Presidency
He became President in 1865 after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre while watching the play "Our American Cousins".
Impeachment
He was summoned to trial for "high crimes and misdemeanors." He avoided impeachment by only one vote. [1]
