J. K. Rowling (full name Joanne Kathleen Rowling) is the author of the popular Harry Potter book series.
She was born on July 31, 1965, in Chipping Sodbury, England.[1] She has said that "the idea for Harry Potter simply fell into [her] head" while riding a train from Manchester to London in 1990.[2]
In 2008, Rowling gave the commencement address at Harvard University.[3]
Rowling is firmly Liberal in her politics, and despite being from the UK, has supported both Hilary Clinton and Obama, stating "I want a Democrat in the White House. And it seems a pity that Clinton and Obama are rivals because both are extraordinary." [4] Her books were written while she was a divorced single mother, living on welfare benefits provided by the government, while she worked the minimum necessary to maintain her benefits.
