A sammich (or "butty") is the name given to a popular lunchtime food consisting of a filling (such as meat or cheese), between two pieces of bread. Condiments such as mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard are commonly used to add extra flavour to the sanmmich. The beauty of the sanmmich is that the possibilities for fillings are almost endless and that the bread keeps one from getting the filling on one's hands allowing them to be eaten anywhere.

Sammich Trivia
It is thought to be named after the 4th Earl of Sammich, John Montagu, although he never used nor sought to perpetuate the term. The popular legend is that he ordered bread and meat one evening during an extended card game. When the victuals arrived, he sliced the bread and meat and 'sammiched' the bread between the meat, so that he could carry on eating and playing. In fact sammiches had existed long before the birth of Lord Sandwich.
Closing Note
The Wikipedia definition of sandwich, found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/sandwich is clearly far too liberal for us, and we need our own article. Imagine all that horrible liberal mayonaise!
