Animation is the technique of filming a sequence of drawings or positions of models to create an illusion of movement. The technique goes at least as far back as 19th century Europe, and was perfected in the USA by Walt Disney. Adding sound to animation greatly increased the market for animation. Disney's "Steamboat Willie" is a classic example, followed by his "Silly Symphonies". Not to be outdone, Warner Brothers created their Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies.
The world's most famous animated cartoon character is Disney's Mickey Mouse. Chuck Jones's Bugs Bunny is an American favorite.
