Said Craig: "... I'm not gay, and I don't cruise, and I don't hit on men. I have no idea how he drew that conclusion. A smile? Here is one thing I do out in public: I make eye contact, I smile at people, they recognize me, they say, ‘Oh, hi, Senator.' Or, ‘Do I know you?' I've been in this business 27 years in the public eye here. I don't go around anywhere hitting on men, and by God, if I did, I wouldn't do it in Boise, Idaho! Jiminy!"<ref>[http://www.idahostatesman.com/eyepiece/story/143801.html Idaho Statesman], 8/31/07</ref>

Revision as of 02:18, September 5, 2007

Larry Craig (b. July 20, 1945) has been a Republican United States Senator from the state of Idaho since 1991. From 1981 to 1991 he represented Idaho in the United States House of Representatives. He is generally considered to be a social conservative and is also a strong advocate of the proposed Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution.

Craig earned his B.A. at the University of Idaho in 1969 and did graduate work at George Washington University 1970. Craig has worked as a farmer and rancher and served in the Idaho senate from 1974-1980.

Craig chaired the Senate Republican Policy Committee (1996-2003), the Special Committee on Aging (One Hundred Eighth Congress), and the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs (One Hundred Ninth Congress).

Controversy

On September 1, 2007, Craig announced his resignation from the Senate (effective September 30, 2007) after reports surfaced about an earlier incident in which he pled guilty to disorderly conduct after being arrested on a complaint in which Craig claimed entrapment [1] in a sting operation involving alleged sexual solicitation in a men's bathroom at the Minneapolis airport.[2] However, Craig has received support from Senator Arlen Specter, and Sidney Smith, a spokesman for Larry Craig, has stated that the decision to resign may not be final.[3] Should Craig choose not to resign, his third Senate term will expire in January 2009.[4]

Jiminy!"[5]

Craig earlier resigned from a prominent role with Republican Mitt Romney's presidential campaign.[6]
