When translating the Bible it is important to capture the original author's meaning as so you need to understand the original language and culture.

Globalism wasn't even a thing in 2nd century. And widespread depression and addiction wasn't an issue either.

Also, the Ancient Near East culture of the Jews was not similar to an American individualistic culture.

Given the above, I suspect the suggested translation is a poor one.
