Zacatecas is a state in central Mexico. Its capital is also called Zacatecas.
In 1546, the Spanish found great silver deposits in the state. Soon thousands of silver mines were operating, and the area became heavily populated and a major producer of silver. Zacatecas is still one of Mexico's largest producers of minerals, primarily silver, gold, mercury, copper, iron, and zinc. The city is known for its cathedral, located in the center of the city, built between 1730 and 1760.
Zacatecas City is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.[1]
