First formed in 1987 under the name Sweet Children, Green Day is a popular pop-punk band from California. They experienced success in the mid-1990s and resurgence in popularity beginning in 2004. Their album American Idiot was turned into a Broadway musical.
Green Day has been involved in charity work with the band U2 in response to Hurricane Katrina and to environmental agencies, wanting to reduce America's addiction to oil. The band has also been a vocal critic of the Bush Administration.
1994 Boston Hatch Shell riot
On September 9, 1994, Green Day played a free show at the Hatch Memorial Shell in Boston, Massachusetts. They began with the song, "Welcome to Paradise" and when they got to "F.O.D." the power was shut down and a mini-riot ensued. Dozens of people were injured and arrested.
