It is located in eastern Washington and is about 18 miles from the Washington-Idaho border. The Spokane River runs through downtown Spokane and Mount Spokane is located to the Northeast.
The city is the home to Gonzaga University, a Jesuit-affiliated school whose men's basketball team is among the elite programs.
