They were one of the more prominent studios during the 1930s and 1940s, with hits like The Wizard of Oz, and later hits like Ben-Hur, North by Northwest, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Its television division, MGM Television, was founded in 1955.

Their logo is very well-known; it features a roaring lion in a frame of film with the Latin phrase Ars Gratia Artis (art for the art's sake) above his head.
