William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) was an American impressionist painter, a noted exponent of American Impressionism best known for his portraits. He was a prolific painter with more than 2000 works, included still lifes, portraits, and landscapes; he worked in all media. One of the largest collection of his paintings is at The Brooklyn Museum of Art.

He devoted much of his time and energy to teaching, at the Art Students League, the Brooklyn Art Association, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Shinnecock Summer School of Art (director), and the New York School of Art, the last two of which he founded and was the most celebrated teacher of his time. National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. The Shinnecock Hills Summer School on Long Island was the first school to offer classes in plein air painting - that is, outdoor landscape painting...
