Yesterday When I Was Young is an English-language adaptation of "Hier Encore". Covered by numerous artists, the most well-known version is that by Roy Clark, which reached #9 on the country charts in 1969 as well as #19 on the pop charts, his only top-40 pop charting song.
The song tells of an older man reflecting on his life, recognizing that he wasted much of it on selfish pursuits. He recognizes now that he will not be able to do all he planned with his life, implying that he is near death.
Clark sang the song at the funeral of baseball great Mickey Mantle at Mantle's request; Mantle had been an alcoholic most of his life.
