The Yangtse (Chinese: Chiangjiang, 'Long River'), is a Chinese river and, at 3,965 miles (6,380 km) in length, is the longest river in Asia. It rises on the Qinghai plateau and flows southwards, north-eastwards, then eastwards through Sichuan, Hubei, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces, entering the East China Sea (Donghai) near Shanghai. The major cities of Chongqing, Wuhan and Nanjing lie on the banks of the Yangtse. The construction of a major hydro-electric power scheme on the middle reaches of the river has caused protests by environmentalists in China and abroad.
