Welsh Marches

The Welsh Marches (Welsh: Y Mers) is a broadly-defined historical and cultural region of England and Wales. In the 21st century, it is typically used to describe the cultural area of Britain formed by the English counties Herefordshire and Shropshire, both on the Welsh border, as well as nearby parts of Wales itself. In a historical context, and in some more broad definitions today, the term may be used to denote all English counties on the Welsh border; (from north to south) Cheshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire, plus the non-border county Worcestershire, as well as the six border counties of Wales; Flintshire, Denbighshire, Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire, Brecknockshire and Monmouthshire.
