Conscience of a Conservative was a best-selling 115-page political book first published in 1960 and subsequently used to promote the candidacy of Barry Goldwater for president in 1964.
The clever title was originally coined by Dean Clarence "Pat" Manion, who then arranged for the book to be ghostwritten by L. Brent Bozell, a prominent conservative writer and senior editor at National Review, and also the brother-in-law of William F. Buckley Jr. Bozell previously penned “McCarthy and His Enemies” (1954), referring to Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy.
This book Conscience of a Conservative ranks among the all-time best-selling conservative classics, along with A Choice Not An Echo.
