Teddy Bear (song)

Teddy Bear is a country song, done in spoken word recitation, by Red Sovine. It would be his last #1 hit on the country charts, and the song (along with "Phantom 309") would become one of Sovine's two most well-known hits.

The song, written during the "CB Radio" craze of the 1970s, includes jargon common to the era.

A truck driver, listening to Channel 19 (the preferred CB channel for truck drivers and travelers at the time), gets a request from a young boy to chat with any driver who could hear him. Having the "handle" (CB nickname) "Teddy Bear", the boy tells a tragic story: his father was a truck driver, who a month earlier died in a road accident. While alive, his father would often let him ride along in his truck, which he enjoyed as he was disabled in both feet. The family had planned that summer to ride together, but now the mother had to work long hours to make ends meet.

Touched by the story, the driver asks for his "10-20" (his location), planning to offer him a ride, only to find that other drivers (listening to the story) had lined up for nearly three blocks, all intending to give Teddy Bear a ride in their trucks. The drivers take up a collection to help the family; later, his mother thanks them over the radio.
