Talk:Windows bugs
The text tool bug in Paint is more of an "undocumented feature" or limitation. But it's still an annoyance, and there's no help within MS Paint when you get stuck.
There are levels of bugs:
- Crashes the operating system - you lose all your unsaved work in all programs
- Crashes the program - you lose your unsaved work in that program
- Feature stops working or works wrong
- Feature is hard to find ("Can't get there from here") - feature exists, but poorly documented, so you can't find it.
I've looked around the web for a central repository, a place where all these things are collected, but I couldn't find anything comprehensive. --Ed Poor Talk 12:58, 16 September 2009 (EDT)
Delete empty folder
You know what's really needed? A simple and painless way to delete an empty folder.
I am so tired of applying the delete command to a folder - which I have just checked and know is empty -- and then getting the shocking warning: Are you sure you want to remove X and all its contents?
First of all, deleting an empty folder shouldn't even have a confirmation.
Second of all, telling me that it has "contents" is false. An empty folder cannot have any contents, so why has Microsoft been telling me for the last 10 or 15 years that my empty folders contain things?
It's the perennial persistence of misleading and scary error messages like this which completely undermine my confidence in Microsoft's operating systems. It's really upsetting that they would let this go on and on, instead of fixing this problem. --Ed Poor Talk 11:07, 18 September 2009 (EDT)
- This bugs me too! Luckily I mostly use Linux which has the command "rmdir" to do exactly this. I believe there's even a working DOS version of this command... it's a wonder Microsoft doesn't just hook it into the delete command. --MarkGall 11:43, 18 September 2009 (EDT)
- How about a real bug: A folder with no files in it claims to contain 15MB of data. An empty folder isn't an empty folder because of this: say you delete a file by accident, then you delete the folder, but you want to restore the accidentally deleted file? Well, the folder saves a tiny amount of data noting that there was a file "x" once in it.
- Another bug used to happen to me a lot with Windows XP Professional SP2. The Recycle Bin would be empty, but the icon would show data still being in it. When I went to click "empty recycle bin", it would say, "Are you sure you want to delete 'WINDOWS'?". Sorry, but I don't have any screencaps of either bug. All I want is for them to change the warning message so that it stops saying "and its contents". Better yet, ask, "Do you want to remove the empty folder X?" That way, I'd be reassured that it's really empty, which is what I wanted in the first place. --Ed Poor Talk 17:33, 18 September 2009 (EDT)
