The case of Zhirinovsky is somewhat amusing. He is described as a staunch nationalist. In the immediate aftermath of the collapse of the USSR, he was described in Western media as a fascist, and there were real fears in Western media that the nationalists could beat Yeltsin at the ballot box. In the times of Glasnost, many nationalists openly accused communism of being a Jewish conspiracy that had suppressed free speech for 70 years. Zhirinovsky became the leader of the nationalists and engaged in antisemitic rhetoric. Now in his 50s, someone presented him with the evidence, actually proof, that his father was Jewish.
