I was under the impression that USS was part of the ship name as given in the example of USS Arizona (BB-39). While not italicized, it is bold and is part of the name of the article and helps distinguish the HMS Vanguard from the USS Vanguard. --Rutm 21:42, 14 August 2007 (EDT)

I think it is both, anyway it won't hurt if one is seeking what the acronym USS is in the first place-Tir
