It should still be titled "Hurricane Irene", as any storm that reaches Hurricane status is called a hurricane for eternity. It will go down as Hurricane Irene, in the same way that every hurricane is recorded as a hurricane, not the tropical storm all hurricanes eventually dissipate to. By this logic, shouldn't we refer to any former President as "Ex-President" in all cases, even though convention tells us to formally refer to them as "President"? AaronL 09:45, 28 August 2011 (EDT)

Yes - storms that reach hurricane statis keep that reference forever. We still call Andrew and Katrina hurricanes even though they eventually downgraded and petered out. The name "Irene" has been used before - I don't know if it will be retired this time or not. It depends on the death toll/damages, I believe. --SharonW 09:56, 28 August 2011 (EDT)
Seeing as all hurricanes begin and end as tropical storms, should we change the name of any other articles on hurricanes for the sake of consistency? BrentH 09:57, 28 August 2011 (EDT)
The name shouldn't be changed because it doesn't make sense to change the names. Once a storm becomes a hurricane it is referred to as a hurricane forever. AaronL 10:00, 28 August 2011 (EDT)
That's not what Aschlafly thinks, and it's his website. BrentH 10:01, 28 August 2011 (EDT)
That is true. AaronL 10:03, 28 August 2011 (EDT)

I know Wikipedia uses the convention of "Hurricane X (Year)" for names that have been used multiple times...if more hurricane articles are created this naming convetion would make sense to use. AaronL 09:58, 28 August 2011 (EDT)

In this case, "Irene" became a "tropical storm" before reaching the major city, so that should be its name. That was not true for Hurricane Katrina.--Andy Schlafly 15:51, 28 August 2011 (EDT)

Does Norfolk not count as a major city? It went right over top of us. --LeoK 21:51, 6 September 2011 (EDT)
I also like that the references all refer to it as a Hurricane --LeoK 22:00, 6 September 2011 (EDT)
Once a storm reaches hurricane classification, it is a hurricane in perpetuity. No way around it. The article should be renamed "Hurricane Irene". AaronL 15:53, 28 August 2011 (EDT)

It first made landfall on the United States mainland in North Carolina as a hurricane. New York is not the only place it hit. The storm should be called a hurricane. --SharonW 19:38, 28 August 2011 (EDT)
