Symbolic Rule

The monarch's symbolic role in Parliamentary politics started at the beginning of the reign of George I (reigned 1714-1727), and was complete by the time of his death, with the actual power of British rule held by Sir Robert Walpole, Great Britain's first "Prime Minister" (technically he was the First Lord of the Treasury, the office of Prime Minister not officially existing at the time. However, the office of Prime Minister was created for the title First Lord of the Treasury, and so the common usuage of Prime Minister is now extended to those who served as the First Lord of the Treasury from Walpole on).[1] Ieuan 21:42 6/Nov/08
