I will not edit this page as it is JacobB's project, but I would like to mention something. Ancient Chinese was logographic, however modern characters are a mix of logograpic and phonographic radicals. I am researching this, and it looks like these mixed characters appeared first during the Qin-Han period as part of their standardizing efforts.
