The original text inadevertently uses antisemitic sources and takes an anti-Israel line.

It quotes a Venona source that says staffers under Niles will take a bribe but they don't know if Niles will take a bribe. Communist agents don't need bribes to do their dirty work. RJJensen 22:41, 5 July 2009 (EDT)

Western Islands Publishers? Have any more sources or information to back support that? TY. Rob Smith 23:27, 5 July 2009 (EDT) reports that Western Islands is the publisher of

The Blue Book of the John Birch Society (now in 21st edition)

as well as Welch's Life of John Birch

RJJensen 23:43, 5 July 2009 (EDT)

The Blue Book is a transcript of the organizations founding meeting according to several sources. Western Islands also published McCarthy's Retreat From Victory, Benjamin Gitlow's The Whole of Their Lives, Charles Willoughby's Shanghai Conspiracy, and host of others from that period. Rob Smith 23:53, 5 July 2009 (EDT)
oh, and Ralph de Toladano's Seeds of Treason on the Chambers-Hiss affair. Rob Smith 23:59, 5 July 2009 (EDT)
The thrust of The Death of James Forrestal by Cornell Simpson is that he was killed by Communist elements, probably including Niles at the White House. (Niles helped Truman get support for the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan and NATO to fight Communism). Other conspiracy theorists argue Forrestal was killed by Zionist elements, probably including Niles at the White House. (actually Forrestal had left office and was in a mental hospital, and was not in a policy role at all.) (see for the crackpot conspiracy theories) RJJensen 00:19, 6 July 2009 (EDT)
None of the original text uses Cornell Simpson as a source, it's on the further reading list (I'm not sure where that was refered from). Do you have a source for your synopsis? Rob Smith 00:27, 6 July 2009 (EDT)
So the link you provide directly quotes Simpson's interview with Henry Forestal, James brother. Henry believe's, we are told, James was murdered. Then in encapsulated form we are given Simpson's view Niles most likely had something to do with it.
Romerstein says Whitakker Chamber's told the FBI Niles had a gay affair in 1934 with someone Chamber's knew bla bla bla. [1] Seems we'd need the Simpsonl text to gauge its real significance.
What about John Loftus as a source? Are you familiar with his telling of Forestal's death? Rob Smith 00:42, 6 July 2009 (EDT)
Niles was a really smart political operator. Did he help force Forrestal's resignation? Maybe. But once Forrestal had resigned and been replaced, Forrestal was powerless (and hospitalized), there was not much point in assassinating him. (Loftus does not mention Niles at all) RJJensen 00:48, 6 July 2009 (EDT)
Loftus makes some strange claims--for example (p 162) that the CIA argued a vote for Israel meant cutting off the US oil supply. Everyone --even the CIA--knew the USA was a huge exporter of oil in those days and did not use Mideast oil. (Britain did need the oil)RJJensen 00:54, 6 July 2009 (EDT)
Yes indeed. MOre tomorrow. Good nite. Rob Smith 00:55, 6 July 2009 (EDT)
Ok, back to Niles. Venona Monograph #4, fn 1 makes an error, correct date should be 30 May 1944 for Venona decrypt #344 Moscow to Mexico City. Also I'm reviewing several FBI files right now with reference to Niles. Rob Smith 20:08, 12 July 2009 (EDT)
