Actually, the the word 'Barbary' comes from the Berber peoples that have formed the bulk of the population of Northwest Africa since ancient times. I am pretty sure the term pre-dates the hirsute siblings but can't cite it at the moment. 22:47, 22 August 2008 (EDT)
