St. Clair County, Illinois

St. Clair County, Illinois is a Democrat-controlled county in Southern Illinois, having its county seat in Belleville. This County has not become more Republican as its surrounding counties have become in the Trump era.[1] The population of St. Clair County has declined to 252,671 as of 2022, with an unemployment rate of 5.7% as of June 2024.

In the 2020 presidential election, St. Clair voted for Biden by 53.2% to 44.5% for Trump, or about 68,000 to 57,000.

St. Clair County's population is 257,400, according to the census, and declined by 6.5% between 2010 and 2022.[2] Its demographics are roughly 60% white, 30% black, 5% Hispanic, and perhaps 2% Asian.

St. Clair County includes East St. Louis, one of the most depressed and crime-ridden cities in the United States.
