1.Describe an aspect of the Great War that you found to be the most interesting, or most influential. Include as an introduction a sentence or two about what the Great War was.
The Great War later known as World War I, started with the assassination of the heir to the Austrian throne by a Serbian teenager in 1914. It was a war between two alliances. I think that the peace terms decided upon at the Treaty of Versailles in 1918 were perhaps the most influential movement of the whole war because it was the ultimate cause of the Second World War. Even though it did not influence the world for the better, I firmly believe that the Treaty Of Versailles and its harsh restrictions and punishments put on Germany, had a huge impact on the future.

2.Explain the what, why, when, and where of communism.
Communism as a whole is a very influential idea. The concept of a world where the rich give to the poor and everyone has the same amount of wealth and privileges, is at first glance very pleasing. However when further studied one can see the intrinsic evil of communism. It forces people to “give” what they have to others who don't have it. It crushes the ideas of individuality. Communism in a sense attempts to create a perfect world here on earth. This concept took root in Russia in the 1900s, and was probably the most influential movement during that time. It was later the cause of many wars throughout the 20th century.

3.Pick an aspect of science in the early 20th century and discuss it.
One of the most influential scientific discoveries of the 20th century was the discovery of quantum mechanics. This theory states that subatomic particles act like waves and are never in a specific place at a specific time. This theory invented by European physicists led to the invention of the small transistor, which today forms the basis of modern day electronics like computers, ipods, radios and digital clocks.

4.Pick any aspect of art or literature in the early 20th century and discuss it.
In the 20th century a new style of art blossomed called expressionism. This style is based on distorted forms and bold colors. One of the most famous painters of that time was Pablo Picasso. He used expressionism to build on his own style of art which became known as cubism. This style used geometric shapes to change the way his subjects looked. Picasso is still admired today for his modern way of portraying art.

7.What is your view of secret alliances among nations? Do you think the secret alliances made World War I worse?
I think that secret alliances during WWI just made the situation worse. It forced the countries of the world to take sides with either of the two main powers. The two major examples of this can be found in the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente. In the late 1800's, the Triple Alliance was formed between Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. They formed an alliance so as to better protect themselves against France. In 1907 when Great Britain felt threatened by the Germans and their allies, they joined the alliance formed between France and Russia called the Triple Entente. This helped to set a sense of dislike between certain countries and a loyalty between other countries that would cause so many problems in WWI.

8.What is your view of the United States entering World War I?
I think that the United States needed to enter into the war after the publication of the Zimmermann Telegram. Although some Americans thought that we needed to go to war after the sinking of our ships by German U Boats, I do not think that that would be reason enough to go to war. The Zimmermann Telegram stated that if Mexico came into the war on the side of Germany then the Germans would help them to regain their land lost in the Mexican War.(1840's) This scared the American people because they believed that the war would move over to their soil. Thus if our country is being attacked or has the threat of an attack, then we should have the right to defend our people.

9.Discuss why the peace after the Great War did not last.
Peace after the Great War did not last because the restrictions that were put on Germany were too harsh. The Treaty of Versailles signed on June 28th, 1919 disarmed Germany as well as punished it for starting the war. It put limits on the size of the German army and prohibited it from having submarines, an air force and factories to make weapons. Germany was also required to pay $33 billion dollars over the course of 30 years. The above restrictions that were put on the Germans caused a great deal of embarrassment and humiliation. Due to the above evidence it is no wonder why World War II broke out. When Hitler rose to power with the ideas of making Germany a strong nation again, he won the support of the German people very easily.
