Founded in 1532 by Sebastian Ramirez de Fuenleal, archbishop of Santo Domingo, it became see seat of the bishopric originally created in 1526 at [[Tlaxcala]]<ref>Encyclopaedia Britannica 1911</ref>. On [[Cinco de Mayo|May 5th]], 1862, Mexican forces under General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated the [[France|French]] army in Puebla. This victory is celebrated every '[[Cinco de Mayo]]'. Puebla is sometimes called 'Puebla de los Angeles' (''The City of [[Angels]]''), though the official name is 'Heróica Puebla de Zaragoza' (''Heroic Puebla of Zaragoza''). This city is listed as a UNESCO [[World Heritage Site]].
