'''Vermont''' is located in the [[New England]] region of the Northeastern part of the [[United States]] and on March 4, 1791, became the fourteenth state to enter into the Union. Its name comes from the French term for 'Green Mountain.' The capital of Vermont is [[Montpelier]] and its largest city is Burlington. The current governor of Vermont is Peter Shumlin, a [[Democrat]].
Vermont is notorious as one of the most [[liberal]] states in the union. Its junior senator, [[Bernie Sanders]] describes himself as a democratic [[socialist]] and is a leading proponent of [[Obamacare]]. In 2000, the state started offering [[civil union]]s, similar to [[same sex marriage]]. On April 7, 2009, legislators overrode the governor's veto of a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in Vermont.<ref>[http://www.answers.com/topic/recognition-of-gay-unions-in-vermont]</ref> It is the home of [[Ben and Jerry's]] Ice CreamCreams, head- quartered in South Burlington , who supports many liberal causes, ex. convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal (b. Wesley Cook) but also was/is the home of at least conservative-associated people like [[Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn]], Russian emigre from the former [[USSR]]
and author of ''[[The Gulag Archipelago]]'' who lived in Cavendish from 1976-1994 and the [[Von Trapps]] from [[Austria]], who moved to Stowe in 1942, almost four years after escaping from the Nazi takeover of their native country.
