Some of Psalms. Chapters, verses

Psalm 23

What Is Psalm 23?[1]

Psalm 23, which begins with the words “Mizmor leDavid” (“A song of David”), is arguably the most famous of all the Psalms. In it, King David sings of G‑d’s protection, referring to Him as a shepherd. David describes how his trust in G‑d never falters, and how, even as he walks through through the valley of the shadow of death, G‑d shields him from harm, vanquishes his enemies and enthrones him in the house of G‑d.

All of six verses, the psalm is a timeless testament to the rock-solid faith of the Jewish people in knowing that G‑d is always with us, protecting and guiding our path.

Psalm 23 in English:

A song of David. The L‑rd is my shepherd; I shall not want. He causes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Even as I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You set a table before me in the presence of my adversaries; You anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows. May only goodness and kindness pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the L‑rd for length of days.

Sometimes, a picture is worth a thousand words. A single phrase can carry the weight of an entire journey, and the words of Tehillim light the way, even in the greatest darkness.

On her way home from captivity in Gaza after 482 days, Agam Berger wrote the words בְּדֶרֶךְ אֱמוּנָה בָּחַרְתִּי and בְּדֶרֶךְ אֱמוּנָה שַׁבְתִּי—“In the path of faith, I have chosen” and “In the path of faith, I have returned.” Words that echo King David’s own cries in Tehillim, as he walked through the valley of the shadow of death, hid in caves, fled for his life—and still, always trusted that Hashem would bring him through.

King David wrote in Tehillim 119:30, “I have chosen the way of faith; I have set Your ordinances before me.” And even in his most desperate moments, he declared, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me” (Tehillim 23:4).

To see these words—“I have chosen the path of faith”—written by a woman who endured captivity, the most profound darkness, for 482 days, is deeply moving. It reminds us that even in the most unimaginable circumstances, faith can be a source of strength.

While nothing compares to the unfathomable experience of being held in captivity, the lesson of choosing faith speaks to all of us in different ways. We all face moments where we feel trapped—whether by fear, uncertainty, or struggles we cannot yet see a way out of. To choose faith is to trust that we are not alone, that we are guided by Hashem, and that His redemption will surely come.
