Skewers in chess are like reverse pins.

A skewer is when a valuable piece of the opponent (such as a king or queen) is attacked and compelled to move away, in order to avoid being captured. Then a less valuable piece is left behind it in the same line of attack, which is then captured.

As with pins, long-range pieces of a queen, rook, or bishop are needed in order to create a skewer. Knights can fork, but not skewer.
