Shtetl

A shtetl (Yiddish for "town") was a Central European (sometimes in Eastern Europe and the Balkans) town or village in which the majority of residents were Ashkenazi Jews. Most shtetls existed between the 16th and early 20th centuries. Chernobyl was an example of a shtetl in pre-Soviet Russia.
