Shavkat Miromonovich Mirziyoyev is the current president of Uzbekistan and was the prime minister of Uzbekistan from 2003 to 2016. Upon becoming president he released a few political prisoners including a journalist, but human rights groups warn that he may still suppress political dissent.[1] He has made efforts to scrap the Soviet-style exit visa system, facing much opposition from internal factions of the government, mainly Rustam Inoyatov.[2][3]
