A sexual offender registry is a database maintained by law enforcement to inform the public of a great deal of information about convicted sex offenders (or, in many jurisdictions, those acquitted of a sex crime solely by reason of insanity or diminished capacity). Among other items, the purpose is to ensure that such registered offenders do not reside near schools, playgrounds or other such places where children frequent.
