Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent.

Self-denial includes fasting and other forms of sacrifice, typically for God or for spiritual/moral/character development. Many individuals in the Bible fasted, including Moses, David, Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, and Jonah.

Lent is a period of self-denial followed by most Christians.
