The schwa sound is an unstressed vowel sound that is a mere "uh", as in "the". It is weak and short, and not any of the short (or long) vowel sounds. It probably devolved from a real vowel sound through frequent use that shortened it.
Better phonics instruction refrains from confusing students with this minor variation. Instead the word "the" is taught as a sight word.
