Scabies is described by the United States Center for Disease Control as "an infestation of the skin with the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabei" with symptoms that include "pimple-like irritations, burrows or rash of the skin" (often on finger webbing, skin folds around the joints, or the penis, breasts or shoulder blades), "intense itching" all over the body (intensifying at night), and sores caused by scratching, which can become infected.
